the old calendar year had been Outstretched

similarly Contracted (Mekbuda) by 3 days
- no longer beginning at the very ancient star
at the north pole but 3 days later.

Originally the highly born family of the Sun,
Moon, and stars dwelt in a cave on the summit of
Maunga-nui, Great Mountain, in the
ancient homeland. They were not at all
comfortable in their gloomy home for they could
not see distinctly and their eyes watered
constantly. After the Sky-father had been
elevated to his present eminence Tane
decided that the celestial family would be
happier in the sky, where they would serve the
double purpose of ornamenting the naked body of
Rangi and giving light to the
Earth-mother. Since Papa had already been
turned with her face toward the Underworld it is
difficult to see how she would benefit by the
illumination ... |

... The
Sothic cycle was based on what is referred
to in technical jargon as 'the periodic
return of the heliacal rising of Sirius',
which is the first appearance of this star
after a seasonal absence, rising at dawn
just ahead of the sun in the eastern portion
of the sky. In the case of Sirius the
interval between one such rising and the
next amounts to exactly 365.25 days -
a mathematically harmonious figure,
uncomplicated by further decimal points,
which is just twelve minutes longer than the
duration of the solar year ... In ancient
Egypt they thought Sirius was behind the
yearly rise of the Nile ... the seasonal
cycle, throughout the ancient world, was the
foremost sign of rebirth following death,
and in Egypt the chronometer of this cycle
was the annual flooding of the Nile

"The Mesopotamian constellation of Bow and
Arrow (mulBAN and mulKAK.SI.DI, or
gag.si.sa), as reconstructed on the evidence
of astronomical cuneiform texts; gag.si.sa /
KAK.SI.DI is Sirius, the 'Arrow-Star'.
The Chinese constellation
built up by the same stars. In China,
however, the arrow is shorter; Sirius is not
the tip of the arrow, but the target: the
celstial jackal T'ien-lang." (Hamlet's Mill) |
The Full Moon could be observed at the Arrow star
(Sham) when the Sun was at
the ancient Bow - when time ran
withershins, governed by the Moon
who rose in the west instead of in the east as the
Sun. But the way up is the same as the way down:
In a way, therefore, the Moon corresponded to Venus as Evening Star
and the Sun to Morning Star Venus.
We have encountered this type of glyph earlier at the pair of 'Spouts', defining the limits of the Pegasus Square:
