From water as a symbol for the kingdom of darkness and the death of light it is not far to the idea of a ship for the dead to travel over these waters. In the Swedish language there is a word nagelfara which means to intensly scrutinize. In Nordic mythology there was a ship for the dead, Nagelfare, constructed of the nails of the dead. I don't know if it was made by fingernails or by toenails. But fingernails carry fire, that the story about Maui and Mahuika told us, so perhaps it was constructed from toenails? This 'scrutinizing' must certainly be related to the judgment of the dead. The 42 judges are those who do this job. Possibly there is a circular movement counterclockwise in GD52. We usually regard the sun as moving clockwise, but if we lay down on our backs and check again we may find that the sun moves counterclockwise. That will happen if we have our heads oriented towards the sun and the feet towards north. The orientation of dead people was important for the Inuit. The feet were used by Tane to raise the sky. And the feet were used by the Entrail Snatcher to move the Mountain. In GD52 the toes are pointing outwards and forward, not inwards and backwards as the fingers of the hand. But the perimeter of a circle may be imagined, hands and feet placed on that. Then - logically - we arrive at the conclusion that also the feet carry fire, because 'fire' 'is' a great circle. Water is the opposite of dryness. When people in Polynesia (and otherwhere too I imagine) are to be mummified the goal is dryness, otherwise the mummy will not last. They should instead be like dried daisies, meant to stay there forever. But they will then be highly inflammable. |
