There were 2 ladies in the night sky,
Andromeda and Virgo. One was high up and the other was
at the equator of the sky. The Sun could be imagined to
follow a path leading down from the one to the other. The
letters of ANDRO EDA are flowing down:
The inundated Square of Pegasus was the
place where Andromeda had been chained to a rock whereas
Virgo was at the dry square of Raven. Or maybe rather at
the watery square at the hind quarters of Leo, because
Raven came with Alchita (α)
at the opposite side of the right ascension half-line border:

TERMINALIA (54) |
Possibly the Chinese Wall
-
in Roman times coinciding with Terminalia
- meant there was a kind of defence line
keeping winter at bay.
Hevelius has here - as if by mistake
- drawn the head of Virgo on the line between 93
Leonis and Denebola, with Alaraph (β
Virginis) as the same star as Denebola (β Leonis):
However, Denebola is higher up than
Alaraph:

Viti: vili,
to pick up fallen fruit or leaves
... In Viti virimbai has the
meaning of putting up a fence (mbai
fence); viri does not appear
independently in this use, but it is
undoubtedly homogenetic with Samoan
vili, which has a basic
meaning of going around; virikoro
then signifies the
ring-fence-that-goes-about, sc. the
moon. In the Maori, aokoro is
the cloud-fence ... Churchill 2. |
