The reason for the odd number of glyphs in the lines on side a of Q presumably is to draw attention to the necessity to 'think twice', not only in double-months etc but also in 2 glyphs per day, a necessary key for understanding this text.

By painstakingly restoring the probable number of glyphs in each line of Q it will be revealed that indeed the time is winter solstice. In Q there are 2 glyphs per day:

*Qb5-29 *Qb5-30 (592) *Qb5-31 *Qb5-32 *Qb5-33 *Qb5-34
592 / 2 + 64 = 360 361 362
...
*Qb5-35 *Qb5-36 *Qb5-37 *Qb5-38 (600) *Qb5-39 *Qb5-40
363 364 365

Honu 'vae kore' (without legs) has been located in the calendar so that day number 290 counted from *Qa1-1 will coincide with winter solstice:

10
*Qb5-17 *Qb5-18 (580) *Qb5-29 *Qb5-30
290 + 64 = 354 5 360

I have restored the number of glyphs in Q as 724, which is equal to 4 * 181 (or 2 * 181 = 362 days). The added 64 days from the end of side b is a pattern we recognize from G.

Counting backwards from the end of side b we will find the first glyph in the calendar to be 724 - 2 * 64 + 2 = 598, quite in agreement with the arrival of the new 'beast' depicted in the glyph:

*Qb5-35 *Qb5-36 (598)
363 = 598 / 2 + 64 = 299 + 64
day 1 (= 363 - 362)

The explanation of 64 = 354 - 290 must be one of the basic 'axioms' of the numerical system. 354 = 12 * 29.5 = 6 * 59 is a fact derived from observations. 290 = 10 * 29, on the other hand, seems to be a 'cosmic artefact', where the idea of 'finished' is expressed twice - 10 as the number of fingers and 29 as the dark night of the moon.

Winter solstice is the 'finish' of old sun.

I will add these thoughts to the page:

The explanation of 64 = 354 - 290 must be one of the 'axioms' of the numerical system. 354 = 12 * 29.5 = 6 * 59 is basically a fact derived from observations. 290 = 10 * 29, on the other hand, seems to be more of a construct by creative human minds. The idea of 'finished' is here expressed twice - 10 as the number of fingers and 29 as the dark night of the moon.

Winter solstice is the 'finish' of old sun.

Less clear is why there are 362 days in Q. I doubt it is a compromise between 360 and 364.

Day 360 has a sun without any sign of fish. But a short downward sloping line at right divides bottom and top at right. In Qb5-13 the same type of line is sloping slightly upwards:

2 10
*Qb5-13 *Qb5-14 *Qb5-17 *Qb5-18 (580) *Qb5-29 *Qb5-30
352 1 290 + 64 = 354 5 360

(352 + 360) / 2 = 356:

352 353
354 355
356

The central position for the sun is not day 354 but day 356:

6 6
*Qb5-13 *Qb5-14 *Qb5-21 *Qb5-22 (584) *Qb5-29 *Qb5-30
352 3 356 = 584 / 2 + 64 3 360

584 = 8 * 73 and equal to the cycle of Venus. The eye-less ariga erua which follows could indicate Venus has reached one of her dark times. Maybe it is her evening apparition who is depicted as tagata mago in Qb5-22.

If so, then we ought to be able to identify her return as morning star 8 days later:

*Qb5-21 *Qb5-22 (584) *Qb5-23 *Qb5-24
*Qb5-25 *Qb5-26 *Qb5-27 *Qb5-28 *Qb5-29 *Qb5-30
*Qb5-31 *Qb5-32 *Qb5-33 *Qb5-34 (596)
*Qb5-35 *Qb5-36 *Qb5-37 *Qb5-38 (600)
day 1 day 2 = (600 - 596) / 2

The glyphs do not support this idea. We can manipulate a little:

352 353
354 355
356 357
358 359
360 361
362 363

The rightmost sign in day 359 with a fist held high is strange considering pau in day 361. They should come in opposite order, with the 'liquid' at the bottom followed by the 'vital spirit' moving upwards.

Maybe the explanation is that the morning star is ready to rise at the end of day 359, while sun still will wait a few days.

In day 362 sun as honu has aquired legs, and after noon he has broken with his past immobile state, the left arm in the following tagata rere is beginning in nothing. He has started to move, and the calendar will begin next day.
