The global map of H can be read as 12 * 36 = 432 = 5 * 36 + 7 * 36.

5 * 36 = 180 = 100 (Hb7-41 - Hb12-49) + 80 (Ha1-1 - Ha5-24). The first glyph of the cycle is Hb7-41:

If we imagine the hole in Hb7-38 to be a 'portal of birth', then the hanau glyphs agree in meaning. The right Y-hand in Hb4-70 (where 4 * 70 = 280 = 10 * 28) is drawn as 'cut-off' and the left Y-hand in Hb7-42 (where 7 * 42 = 294 = 6 * 49) is 'ghostly'.

At right in Hb7-39 (where 7 * 39 = 273 = 13 * 21) a honu with Janus eyes seems to be produced by the woman (?) at left.

As to Hb7-38, we can also repeat some of what has been written earlier:

 

... From H we have learnt that there is one egg-formed honui hole at summer solstice and another at winter solstice:

... The hole sign is - it seems - connected with summer solstice, but not necessarily with winter solstice. If it occurs at winter solstice, as for instance in Hb7-38, then it could be to indicate the return of sun through a hole similar to that at summer solstice:

7 * 38 = 266 alludes to how the total blackness of Te Pei (236) is turned into its opposite by the blazing Te Pou (Sirius, at 266) ...

 

Honu at Hb7-32 (where 7 * 32 = 8 * 28) is located 6 glyphs earlier than honui, and presumably the glyph depicts the situation for the old sun. His head is about to disappear. Only after that has happened can a new sun be born. It must be absolutely dark before a new fire can be alighted.

At winter solstice it is 'night' (cfr mauga at Hb7-43, where 7 * 43 appropriately is equal to 1 + 300), and Sirius is the best source of light. Old sun is going away and the new sun baby needs to grow up. Half a year later sun is in his full strength, it is midsummer:

180 days from winter solstice Ha5-24 will be glyph number 300 + 240 = 540 = 9 * 60. At his height spring sun has no way to go higher, 9 is the last one-digit number.

Then the measurement changes, from solar doublemonths (multiples of 60) to lunar doubleweeks (multiples of 14). 180 = 3 * 60 and 252 = 18 * 14. 60 and 18 represent the sun, 14 the moon. We can conclude that also 3 must represent the moon.

Our map for the time beyond midsummer has been drawn with the lunar measure 29.5 instead of 28 though:

Sun is disappearing around Ha10-31, where 10 represents the maximum for sun (as in 10 * 30 = 300), and 31 is 'one more' than 30.

The same message is delivered by 531 (as counted from Ha1-1), the ordinal number for Ha10-29 (where 29 obviously is the dark night of the moon, no feathers on this ariki). 5 (fire) together with 'one more' than its limit (30).

177 nights is equal to half a lunar year. 531 - 177 = 354 = 12 * 29.5. At midsummer (Ha5-24) it is day number 80 counted from Ha1-1, and day number 180 counted from winter solstice. Yet we can also find the message 354 days by mixing the glyph number (531) with the day number (177). 531 is equal to 1½ years (as counted by the moon).

In G it was possible to identify winter solstice one more time, viz. at Gb3-11:

We arrived there by simply counting on beyond the first glyph of winter solstice (Gb6-26, 409) and (472 - 409) + 302 = 365. The new dawn light (moe in Gb3-12, where 3 * 12 = 360) is at 303 = 366. Birth is presented vividly in Gb3-13, and there is a honu with hole in Gb3-15.

In Gb3-10 feathers envelop honu, and huru comes to mind:

Maybe we should establish a new glyph type, huru, characterized as enveloped in feathes? A few such are found under honu, e.g. in G:

The 'glow of the sun before rising' is quite similar in meaning to what I have suggested for moe. Where do we get if we count 365-366 days beyond Hb7-40? 180 + 98 = 278 is to where we have reached so far:

832 is expressing the maximum of 'fire multiplication', 8 combined with 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 (5 times).

365 * 3 = 1095. From Ha10-30 to number 1095 (counted beyond Hb7-40) there are 263 glyphs, to day 366 there are 266 glyphs. Why should we be surprised? 180 + 97 = 277 and the 88 days needed beyond Ha10-29 convert to 264 glyphs.

266 makes us think about the position of Te Pou at 9 * 29.5 = 265.5 and we should stop here for a moment to consider a phenomenon which may have to do with our quest: A sequence of glyphs seems to have been destroyed where we would like to read about what happens after sun's disappearance:

It is not improbable that the creator of H intentionally avoided to engrave the glyphs where darkness falls. Such a time cannot easily be described in visual terms. We recognize the method from earlier.

The suspicion is growing in force by the fact that the same phenomenon occurs where double henua ora sweep away everything, 100 days beyond day 192 (*Ha11-7, 876):

In Ha10-36 a clear reference is 10 * 36 = 360, and 360 - 280 = 80. If we add 3 * 80 = 240 glyphs before our counting has begun (with Hb7-41) we maybe will find another starting point? Hb7-41 has ordinal number 997 as counted from Ha1-1.

997 - 240 = 757 is the ordinal number of Hb3-10:

This surely is a possibility, because 3-10 refers to the solar month, and the elbow ornament could depict a kind of cycle. But we cannot pursue this idea here and now, it is already quite too complicated.

The huru sign occurs also on fishes (but not in G):

They fetched fire from Hanga Te Pau in order to make a meal of all the fishes they had caught at Hanga Hoonu, and now we know where it is. It is when a new sun must be alighted, at the end of the dark time.

Also the text of G tells about all the fishes (thought without huru signs), and its creator has dared to tell about the days between 360 and 366:

Reading the glyphs again I suspect Gb3-9 ought to be equal to day 364 and day 365 to be at honu huru (Gb2-10), which would place day 360 at Gb3-5. But certainly Gb3-6 indicates 360. And Gb3-7 at 361 is a generator (one more than 360), and likewise Gb3-11 generates in the dark beyond 364.

The creator of G did not have to worry about the winter solstice times at Gb6-26 and Gb3-11 because his calendar text (at least on side b) is based on the lunar month - only 'between the lines' can we read also the solstices.

Gb3-15 at 369 has an ordinal number which disagrees with the powerfully drawn winter solstice sign. Suppose sun measurements relating to the solstices should not count Gb8-30 twice at each turn of the wheel. If so, then we will have 471 - 408 = 63 days beyond Gb6-26 to the end of side b. And Gb3-11 will be glyph number 290 + 11 = 301 counted from Ga1-1. 63 + 301 = 364 will be at Gb3-11 (and not at Gb3-9). We realize that in order to arrive at Gb3-9 as 364 we have to count Gb8-30 twice and, furthermore, to count twice also some other glyph. Maybe at the end of side a?

Now we move back to H again. We must not forget our goal:

The method of comparing H with G (and the other way around) has been successful so far. Let us continue on that road. The stream of time in line Ha11 is cut off beyond the double henua ora:

Tara at Ha11-3 agrees, 872 can be read as 8 * 72 = 16 * 36 and tara is a type of sign which indicates winter solstice. In G next significant event comes at 13 * 29.5 = 383.5, a multiple of 13 which signifies a dark time. It is time for reproduction (Roto Iri Are - without Te because sun is not present, and one wonders who will sire).

Tama comes at Gb7-3, where 7 * 3 = 21 indicates 'one more' and where the night has ordinal number 14 * 29.5 + (significantly) 1 = 414 (which we can read as 100π + 100):
