By studying the text of Mamari (especially side a) it becomes evident that tagata rere glyphs were used to mark the end of seasons:

waxing sun
36 139 33
Ca2-11 (100) Ca7-9 (240)
6 * 29.5 = 177
210 = 14 * 15
waning sun waxing sun
116 62
Ca8-12 Ca12-12 Ca12-13 Ca12-14 (1)
118 = 4 * 29.5 63
182 = 13 * 14

Ca7-9 and Ca8-12 are looking back and their meaning, therefore, should be the opposite - they mark the beginning of a season. When counting time number 240 will be equal to 'time zero'.

Another example, on side b, shows tagata rere located just before a Rogo glyph:

Cb7-22 Cb7-23 Cb7-24 (168) Cb7-25 Cb7-26 Cb7-27

This Rogo seems to identify the end of a cycle with 6 months, each counted as 28 nights. 6 * 28 = 168 = 7 * 24. Rogo is positioned at 'time zero' and the following vero glyph presumably 'kills' the old 'year'. The maro string growing at left means 'growth is in the past'.

The sign of looking back explains why we have tagata rere glyphs as glyph number 2 in the periods of the Mamari moon calendar, e.g.:

Ca8-11 Ca8-12 Ca8-13 Ca8-14 Ca8-15

The first position is occupied by a variant of Rogo (probably at time zero of the period). The impression is that waxing is over (in the past) and in front is waning (the uplifted front arm is formed as if a sign of growing moon).
