Mamari (C, RR
2) This is one of the few tablets which certainly can be dated to premissionary times (Fischer). It is one of the four tablets which Bishop Jaussen on Tahiti showed Metoro Tau'a Ure and let him read for him. The tablet is of wood from 'Mimosa' (Myrtaceae). Pictures (Barthel):
Both sides have 14 lines. The name Mamari is probably from the shape of the tablet, i.e. like an 'egg' (= mamari). Perhaps it was originally called Kohau 'o te Ranga, meaning Tablet of the Vanquished.
