GD36

All the glyphs of this type in Tahua have signs, e.g. Aa1-72, Aa2-20 and Aa2-2:

This is obvious in the glyph at left, but not as clear in the two at right. GD36 should be assymmetric (with a sharper point at right) - that is not the sign. The sign is a tiny 'tooth' at bottom left, hardly noticeable in the third glyph. In Pa6-27, a glyph parallel with Aa2-2, the 'tooth' is very clearly indicated:

The overall form of the 'bent branch' varies. Aa1-72 (see above) is closer to the norm than the other examples. Ab5-18 is also close to the norm:

Ab8-28 is not close to the norm:

In combinations with GD32 we can see a range of possibilities, e.g. Aa5-18, Ab6-55 and Ab7-39:

An unusual variant, with the 'tip of the branch' missing, is seen at right in the complex glyph Aa1-26:

GD36 may be inverted, as seen in Aa1-20 and Aa7-50:

Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish GD36 from GD44 ('sickle of the moon') and therefore I have a hyperlink from GD36 to GD44 (and the other way). I have also classified the two glyphs above as both GD36 and GD44 due to the uncertainty.

Clear cases of GD36, though, are Ab6-28 and Ab7-5:

I have also classified as GD36 the glyphs Aa2-6 (due to the top right sign) and Ab2-41 (top left sign):

After some hesitation also the left part of Aa2-45 has persuaded me to sort the glyph as GD36 (in addition to GD78):

That decision allows more glyphs to be classified as GD36, e.g. Aa5-55 and Aa6-15:

Even such examples as Ab6-70, Ab6-68, Ab6-67 suddenly became possible:

However, to let these three and other similar glyphs with 'pointed arms' belong to GD36 would be impractical. Also - the 'pointed arms' could very well be just that, stylized versions of GD35. But I will not include them in GD35 either. The purpose of the glyph catalogue is to be able to locate glyphs of a certain kind, but the 'pointed arms' seem to be of various kinds.

Such an example as Ab6-41 I found reasonable to classify as GD79 ('shepherd's staff'):

There exist other similar 'doubly bent branches', e.g. Ba5-35:

But I have no special GD for them. To help I have included a hyperlink from GD36 to GD79.

Following that lead I also classified the following glyphs (Ab2-73, Ab4-37, Ab4-38, Ab6-86) as GD79 (and not at the same time as GD36):

A similar difficulty is found in the GD23 glyphs, where the 'frontal member', as e.g. in Aa6-24, possibly may be seen as a 'bent branch':

Also here I have solved the problem by inserting a hyperlink (from GD36 to GD23 - though not the other way).

There remains two special cases, Aa7-31 and Ab7-2:

I have classified them as GD36 although it is clear that they fundamentally belong to GD113 respectively to GD54.

Glyphs in other GD which have signs in form of a 'pointed branch' (or equally well a 'pointed arm', a 'pointed wing' etc) and which possibly are allusions to GD36, are not included in GD36. Examples (Aa3-61, Ab5-51, Aa4-11, Aa1-10):

GD26 may be a combination of GD62 and GD36, but that does not force me to include GD26 also under GD36.

GD36 is difficult to classify and probably I will later have to revise what is written above, when the glyphs from other table texts have been investigated.
