This glyph certainly means 'light' and the Sun indeed gives us light, i.e. the Sun is necessary for dispersing the darkness. In the dark we cannot orient ourselves but with light we can see where we are and our surroundings. That is the reason we have eyes. I therefore suspect that the little oval at top right of this type of glyph might stand for - among other things - 'eye'. According to Aristoteles the eye is functioning by sending out its light in order to grasp what is observed. I now come to doubt my earlier idea about two little ovals being ears when seen where the ears should be. Instead I now tend to believe that we ought to see 'eyes' / light there, either through association from the type of glyph above (by way of similarity at the 'head' end) or through association from some sort of sun-sign used as ear-plugs in ancient times. |
