First we should remember that in Marquesas Tu was a one-eyed god. This one eye could mean a coconut or a nut or seed in general.

Then: Tu, the god of war, was man's help in robbing nature of its goods. To live man must kill, i.e. be assisted by Death, the god. War means death.

'Half a canoe' - I think - means death, a 'canoe' life. The community was one with its chief, represented by his canoe.

The moon (Hina) is a living representation (map) of our reality, seen in the sky, showing the play of dark and light, death and life, Tu and Tane. The calendar of the month, then, should be a map showing not only the phases of the moon but also this play of reality.
