This is assimilation. You cannot learn anything unless there is a common ground between yourself and what is to be learnt (assimilated).

Trying to understand the rongorongo texts I therefore have tried to find common ground. But I must try to be as 'blue' as possible, not turn the texts into 'green'.

I believe 'blue' here means the sky with its stars and 'planets'. As I progress further in assimilating this 'blue' the distinction towards 'green' will be less and less of trouble. (Many languages 'see' blue and green as the same colour.)
