In South America there were no lions (and
before the Europeans arrived there were no horses -
therefore no Winged Horse).
But there was the Puma:
A pair of waterways (Tullumayu
and Watanay) worked together in gradually squeezing
the great Cat in the sky away, tapering him off. At the beginning of summer the great
Sky Bull broke through the rain clouds and at the end of
summer the water came back with a revenge.
Hevelius has drawn the tail of his lion
excessively long, like a serpent with a head at the
end. The star at this serpent's head is 93 Leonis. The
straight line from δ
(Zosma) to β (Denebola) can be imagined as the diagonal
in a square where also θ (Coxa) and 93 are corners.
Denebola marked the final
point of Leo, as if it had been a mirror
image of the Hyades Gate where Sky and Earth began to separate:

"Uruga.
Prophetic vision. It is said that, not long
before the first missionaries' coming a certain
Rega Varevare a Te Niu saw their arrival
in a vision and travelled all over the island to
tell it:
He-oho-mai ko Rega Varevare a
Te Niu mai Poike, he mimiro i te po ka-variró te
kaiga he-kî i taana uruga, he ragi: 'E-tomo te
mo-kirokiro he-mate.
Rega Varevare, son of
Te Niu, came from Poike, and toured
the island proclaiming his vision: 'A wooden
house will arrive at Tarakiu (near
Vaihú), a barge will arrive, animals will
arrive with the faces of eels (i.e. horses),
golden thistles will come, and the Lord will be
heard in heaven'. The next morning he arrived
back in Poike, and in the evening when it
was getting dark, he died."
