Once again - rehearsing the runes was necessary not only to keep them firm in memory but also because understanding would come only gradually, and what went unnoticed the first few times would later suddenly break through. Reading the rongorongo texts should have been quite similar - understanding would come only piecemeal, like the skin from the huge water serpent drawn up onto dry land. Growth takes time.

The open 'eyes' (mata) in the pu type of glyph has its negation (mirror image) in the puo (covered) type of glyph:

pu puo
Pu

1. To come forward to greet someone met on the road; to walk in front, to go in front: ka-pú a mu'a, let them go first. 2. Pú a mu'a, to intervene, to come to someone's rescue; he-pú-mai a mu'a, he-moaha, he came to my rescue and saved my life. 3. Ancient expression: ai ka-pú, ai ka-pú, tell us frankly what you think. 4. Hole, opening, orifice; well; circumference, rotundity; swirling water; pú-haga, vaginal orifice; pú-henua (also just henua), placenta. He pú henua nó te me'e aau, he-oti-á; ina-á me'e ma'u o te rima i-topa-ai koe, a placenta was all you had, it is a past thing now; you held nothing in your hands when you were born (stern words said to children to make them realize that they must not be demanding, since they were born naked and without possessions). 5. To dig out (tubers): he-pú i te uhi, to dig out yams. Vanaga.

1. A trumpet. P Mgv.: pu, a marine shell. Mq.: pu, conch shell. Ta.: pu, shell, trumpet. 2. A small opening, hole, mortise, stirrup, to pierce, to perforate, to prick; pu moo naa, hiding place; taheta pu, fountain, spring; hakapu, to dowel, to pierce, to perforate. PS Sa., Fu., Niuē: pu, a hole. Churchill. Mq.: Pu, source, origin. Ma.: pu, root, origin, foundation. Churchill.

Puo

(Also pu'a); pu'o nua, one who covers himself with a nua (blanket), that is to say, a human being. Vanaga.

1. To dress, to clothe, to dress the hair; puoa, clothed; puoa tahaga, always dressed. 2. To daub, to besmear (cf. pua 2); puo ei oone, to daub with dirt, to smear. 3. Ata puo, to hill up a plant. Churchill.

Mata

1. Tribe, people; te mata tûai-era-á, the ancient tribes. 2. Eye; mata ite, eyewitness. 3. Mesh: mata kupega. 4. Raw, uncooked, unripe, green, matamata, half-cooked, half-ripe. Kahi matamata, a tuna fish. Vanaga.

1. The eye; mata neranera, mata kevakeva, mata mamae, to be drowsy; mata keva, mataraparapa, matapo, blind; mata hakahira, squint eyed; mata pagaha, eye strain. 2. Face, expression, aspect, figure, mien, presence, visage, view; mata mine, mata hakataha, mata pupura, mata hakahiro, to consider. 3. Raw, green, unripe. 4. Drop of water. 5. Mesh; hakamata, to make a net. 6. Cutting, flint. 7. Point, spear, spike (a fish bone). 8. Chancre. Matamata, sound of water. Churchill. Matá. Black obsidian spear points, all belonging to the Late Period which began ca 1680. Heyerdahl 3.

There is a wide range of significations in this stem. It will serve to express an opening as small as the mesh of a net or as large as a door of a house; it will serve to designate globular objects as large as the eye or as small as the bud on a twig or the drop of rain, and designating a pointed object it answers with equal facility for the sharpened tip of a lance or the acres of a headland; it describes as well the edge of a paddle or the source from which a thing originates. Churchill 2.

In Ca3-11 the design was evidently influenced by the following 'place of breaking through' (koti-ga) - drawn like a cell dividing, or as Father Sky being forced to separate from Mother Earth:

... They were Ranginui, the Sky Father, and Papatuanuku, the Earth Mother, both sealed together in a close embrace. Crushed between the weight of their bodies were their many children, whose oppression deepened. They yearned to be free; they fought their parents and each other to break loose. Tuumatauenga, virile god of war, thrust and shouted; Tangaroa of the oceans whirled and surged; Tawhirirangimaatea, Haumiatiketike and Rongomatane, of wild foods and cultivated crops, tried their best but were not successful; and Ruamoko, god of earthquakes, yet to be born, struggled in the confinement of his mother's womb ... Of them all, Taane Mahuta, the god of the forests, was the most determined; he set his sturdy feet upon his father's chest, and braced his upper back and shoulders against the bosom of his mother. He pushed; and they parted. So the world, as the Maori understand it, came into being ...

Should we try to apply the 3 missing runes, the nakshatra day number for this separation could become 326 + 3 = 329 (November 25) - which would point at Antares (the entrance pillar south of the equator) rising with the Sun 249 days after 0h. When Gregory XIII defined 0h to be a position 3 days earlier than anciently had been found out from the stars, Antares was pushed ahead in his calendar with 3 days. Ana-mua had to be in day 326 + 3 = 329 = 249 days after 0h instead of the otherwise expected 246 (= 2 * 123 = 6 * 41).

P Pau.: koti, to chop. Mgv.: kotikoti, to cut, to cut into bands or slices; kokoti, to cut, to saw; akakotikoti, a ray, a streak, a stripe, to make bars. Mq.: koti, oti, to cut, to divide. The last glyph on side b represented a puo (covered) day. Once upon a time Hyadum I rose with the Sun in day *364 (MARCH 20) and Hyadum II in day *365 (MARCH 21).

*365¼ - *365 = ¼ could have been hidden (puo) in the non-visible glyph space before Ga1-1.
