348. There were 5 days from heliacal Situla (with Argo Navis at the other side of the year) to Fomalhaut (with the empty Crater at the Full Moon):

At Corvus (black Raven beyond the hind paws of the Lion) the Hydra serpent had no more water to deliver whereas at the other side of the year a flow of refreshing spring water emerged at Achernar (*23, April 13 → 413 = 14 * 29½) below the powerful black feet of the Phoenix.
... There was no water in the village. The lakes and rivers were dry. Raven and Crow, two young girls who were having their first menstrual courses, were told to go and draw water from the ocean. Finding the journey too long, Raven decided just to urinate into her basket-bucket. She decieved no one and was severly scolded. Crow returned much later but with drinking water. As a punishment, Raven was condemned never to find water in the summer; only in winter would she find something to drink. For that reason the Raven never drinks during the hot months; she speaks with a raucous voice because of her dry throat ...

Invigorating (heated) sweet water (vai ora) rose up in the Eridanus river towards Acamar (θ, *43) and from there across to δ (Rana, the Frog, *55) and γ (Zaurak, the Boat, *58).
... When the new moon appeared women assembled and bewailed those who had died since the last one, uttering the following lament: 'Alas! O moon! Thou has returned to life, but our departed beloved ones have not. Thou has bathed in the waiora a Tane, and had thy life renewed, but there is no fount to restore life to our departed ones. Alas ...
A new year was waiting to begin 23 right ascension days after the Frog (Rana) - viz. at Rigel (*78) in Orion.
The Pleiades year began 23 days before the Rigel (*78) year and Bharani (*41.4 → 14 * 29½ + 1) rose 23 days before Rana (*55) at the right ascension day of Tau-ono (the 6 'stones' in the Pleiades). 23 + 23 = 2 * 23 (Gb2-23) = 46 → 460, and 460 - 182 = 278 (Gb2-23) = 96 (Ga4-13) + 182.
From Bharani to Hyadum II (δ Tauri, *64) there were another 23 right ascension days and the year of the Bull began *78 - *64 = *14 days before the Rigel year - which should be the eldest of them because precession steadily moved the stars ahead in the Sun year.
... In view of the almost universal prevalence of the Pleiades year throughout the Polynesian area it is surprising to find that in the South Island and certain parts of the North Island of New Zealand and in the neighboring Chatham Islands, the year began with the new Moon after the yearly morning rising, not of the Pleiades, but of the star Rigel in Orion. Such an important difference can be explained only on the assumption that the very first settlers ... brought the Rigel year with them ... from some other land 10° south of the equator where Rigel acquired at the same time its synonymity with the zenith. Colonists who arrived in New Zealand from Central Polynesia during the Middle Ages and intermarried with the tangata whenua, 'people of the land', found themselves between the horns of a calendrical dilemma. They must either convert the aborigines to the Pleiades year beginning in November-December or themselves adopt the Rigel year [together with heliacal rising observations] and bring down the wrath of their ancestors on their own heads. That there resulted a long and passionate struggle on the part of both the invaders and the invaded to retain their own the integrity of the sacred year of their traditions can hardly by doubted. The outcome of the conflict proved that the institution of the land was too firmly established to be changed. While some tribes retained the Rigel year in its entirety others effected a compromise by retaining the Pleiades year but commencing it in June ...

The hipu glyph in Gb2-27 (→ π) suggests a flow of sweet water could have originated from the Water star (Matar) - in the season which was the opposite of the dry Alkes (Shallow Basin) season.
Hipu. Calabash, shell, cup, jug, goblet, pot, plate, vase, bowl, any such receptacle; hipu hiva, melon, bottle; hipu takatore, vessel; hipu unuvai, drinking glass. P Mgv.: ipu, calabash, gourd for carrying liquids. Mq.: ipu, all sorts of small vases, shell, bowl, receptacle, coconut shell. Ta.: ipu, calabash, cup, receptacle. Churchill. |
Another hipu came in Gb4-17, which was 55 days later (→ *55 as in Rana), and this one was close to the river Eridanus:
