"Nanurjuk

Usually the star Aldebaran (mag. 0.85) in the constellation Taurus. Nanurjuk is best seen in the early months of the year. Appearing late in the afternoon to the northeast, its route traces a wide arc across the sky to the northwest where it sets in the pre-dawn sky of the next day.

For some Igloolik elders, mainly those with links to Aivilingmiut traditions, Nanurjuk is Alcyone, the principal star in the Pleiades cluster ...

Nanurjuk means 'like, or having the spirit of, a polar bear."

 

"Sakiattiak

The Pleiades, an open star cluster in the constellation Taurus. Circumpolar at the latitude of Igloolik, Sakiattiak is typically seen as a patch of light to the right of and high above Nanurjuk. On any clear midwinter night the constellation will be in the eastern or southern sectors of the sky.

Sakiattiak means 'breast bone', a name suggested by the apparent arrangement of the stars in this cluster.

... The Pleiades were for the Inuit an important and widely recognized star cluster. The names given to this cluster by various Inuit groups reflect, to some extent, the role played by the Pleiades in their legends. Frequently the cluster is said to represent a bear surrounded by baying dogs."
