"Makemake or Ko Makemake was born in the sea from a skull belonging to an old woman priestess of Ahu Tongariki. According to the Catholic missionaries, Makemake rewarded the good and punished the bad, and spoke through both male and female priests. The priests were 'very able ventriloquists', demanding contributions of food from the Rapa Nui. Warriors associated with these priests appear to have formed a secret society, occasionally making off with small children as sacrificial offerings."
