"MOLE, s. Haw., tap-root of a tree, bottom of a pit or sea, foundation, cause; fig. offspring, descendants from a root. So far as I am aware, only found in the Hawaiian dialect.
Sanskr., mūla, root of a tree, the lowest part, origin, cause, commencement, near, proximate; pāda-mūla, sole of the foot.
Lat., moles, a mass, lump, heap, foundation, a dam.
Benfey refers the Sanskrit mūla to a 'vb. mah', whose original form again was magh, to be great, powerful. I know not the process of such a derivation, but think it faulty in view of the Polynesian mole and the Latin moles."
