Fischer comments that there were no such word as keiti in the
old Rapanui language and that no such word existed in the
Tahitian language either. Fischer's explanation is that Bishop Jaussen made a mistake. Probably he had asked his household staff from Easter Island first about Tahua (a large tablet) and then about Keiti. They "... might have replied that it was, Ke 'iti - that is, the 'small ('iti) other (ke) one'. Bishop Jaussen, it will be remembered, understood no Rapanui." |
