Moon herself has the concave side to the left, like the mirror of the sun who should have his concave side to the right.
Moon is illuminated at the front (the right side) because sun is in front. Marama is the sign for sun at the back side, not visible in front - it must be night. The sign for day (tapa mea) has no need to be concave in any direction - sun is the source of light wherever he is located. Yet in e.g. Ha5-55 the concave at left tapa mea variant alludes to the crescent of the night, presumably a sign that the growing (crescent) day is the opposite of the growing moon. During p.m. only the bottom half of tapa mea in Ha6-11 and -14 remember the a.m. growth - the top part represents noon:
