In the parallel K text there are no gagana eyes. Below I have used the following 7-day chart:
Green for Venus is the colour she gets after a while, copper becomes green.
If Sun should be at Ka1-12, then we understand why he is vanishing - in the preceding vaha kai he goes down. Jupiter has lost his head to Venus, which produces a rising fish from it. Mercury tries to do the same, but he cannot (of course). He is a male but tries to be a female. Mars is similar to Jupiter, he brings fire, but not of the same kind and not with the same result. From the signs and the number chart I dare say that the vanishing sun glyph (Ka1-12) is meant to indicate the back side of kiore + henua, which later becomes more of a reality in Ka3-21 (where 21 could refer to Mars):
Niu (left in Ka3-16) could refer to Jupiter because of number 16 and the position close to Venus. But the sign is at left, and it could therefore refer to Mercury. However, the left part of the glyph is the same entity as the right part (and the 'person' is 'dead'). Also the person in Ka1-9 is dead. Reasonable results are acquired by this method. Let us therefore begin from the beginning:
Ka1-5 for Sun is a good fit, it looks like the 'fire generator' of spring, already 'eating'. The first 4 glyphs are not very clear, though. Spooky characters. Once again 4 special ones ('Bacabs') appear at the beginning. The shapes of Sun and Moon, though, are vital and they do have some resemblance with Sun and Moon in the first henua period:
The signs are inverted, it seems. Beyond Ka1-12 comes another suit of 4 special glyphs, they are lost. And they have the special numbers too (13, 14, 15, 16):
*Ka1-18 (ariki) is here the king of the dark, Saturn. Likewise in Ka1-4. It is quite interesting to find this to agree rather well with what was summarized for ariki in the dictionary:
Though the ordinal numbers in the glyph lines (6, 21, 24) do not agree with those over which Saturn rules. Only Ga1-24 will fit, because it will be number 25 if Gb8-30 is counted. 21 will become 22 (Mercury) and 6 will become 7 (Mars), not completely incomprehensible. The Mars glyph has feathers, but not the Mercury one. Now on to the parallel to gagana:
Tao in Ka2-1 acquires the role of Mercury by force of number 1. Jupiter (Ka2-2) has also here the 'dead' characteristic, and we can suggest this as a fundamental part of his character (at least at this time of the year and according to K):
Fundamental is that a new glyph line comes with tao, I think. The limit is with the glyph of Venus:
Mars in *Ka1-21 has the curious thread at the back of his head here, and we saw it already in Ka1-7:
Since then a fortnight has passed. Jupiter in *Ka1-23 has nearly disappeared completely compared with Ka1-9, but we can see the similarity with the half vanished tagata in Ka1-9. The right arm in Ka1-9 may have moved to the left, and been even more impressed by the vaha kai of Saturn. Maitaki in *Ka1-24 is lifted up (reva). The first glyph line on side a is completed. 24 is the last day for Venus according to my chart. Then we have the nut to crack:
At left in *Ka1-21 there is a composition with waning moon (presumably alluding to the preceding Moon which then will be at full moon). *Ka1-20 resembles the form of the sky tree, and I once identified Ca7-23 with the night Rakau (the tree):
The night Rakau will in Ca7-23 be Jupiter, which fits him well. When Sun is absent there is a full Moon. This is implied in the broken staff at bottom in Ca7-24 and in the vanished glyph at position *Ka1-19:
It will therefore appear to be a description of the phases of the moon, beginning with full moon and ending with growing moon:
In *Ka1-21 the triplet of maitaki balls are at the very left (growing moon is definitely in the past), then comes the waning moon crescent. Between the waning and the waxing (*Ka1-22) there must be a dark new moon phase. We suddenly will realize what the thread at the back of the head is. Together with the henua sign immediately to the left it represents the same idea as in Ca7-24. There is an apex, but the thread represents the thread of the moon, not the henua of spring sun. Mars is the planet who then will bring fire, disperse the darkness. Let us compare with G:
In general it is obviously the same message, but the numbers and the planets must be different because K has short glyph lines:
The longer lines of G ought to give a more appropriate description, not so compressed as in K. The hole at right in gagana at Ga1-18 cannot be seen in *Ka1-21. But we know what it means - it is the hole through which someone goes down and will no longer be seen. The phase of dark new moon is instead used. The hole as vaha kai is located earlier (Ka1-11). In Ga1-11 the gagana head has 2 holes though:
In Ga1-17 the waning moon is ending (shown by wilting maro). The curious Ga1-19 should be Sun, and therefore the growing marama must have an extra sign. Gagana in Ga1-18 and the dark phase of the moon bird in *Ka1-21 both indicate darkness below (down on earth). The crown of the cosmic tree (planted at midsummer) is casting a shadow down onto the earth.
The 'wings' of the black bird are drawn to resemble the black tree crown. At tara in the dictionary the sign at bottom right in Ga1-19 was interpreted as a tara sign:
The hand gesture in the Rogo glyph Eb7-37 is interesting. Hands down should be the opposite of hands up. Instead of the normal hand position they have gone down. Sun is inside Tuna. |
