If there are signs of spring activity in line Qb1, as tentatively concluded from the appearance there of 4 henua staff glyphs, then - maybe - fish glyphs should be absent. Or should they?

First there is only water (the primordial sea), then sky is separated and star 'fires' appear in the sky (which cannot be possible as long as seawater is in touch with the sky). Only later will daylight come in, because firm land (terra firma) must first come up from the sea (in order to put staffs on for pushing the sky roof even higher).

Fishes could be present during the first two stages, of course, but when land has appeared the fishes are no longer in focus. However, if rising sun is depicted as a rising fish (ika glyph) then fishes can be present all over the text.

Rising fishes would be OK, but not descending ones. At least not when sky is being pushed up.

This idea needs testing. First we will look at G and K. Are there any descending fishes in these two texts, and if so, where are they located in time-space:

Ga2-17 Ga2-28 Gb1-4 Gb4-12 Gb8-16

In spring there are no descending fishes:

66 25 44 66
Ga4-3 Ga6-13 Ga7-10 Ga8-21 Gb3-1
68 26
68

In K there are not many ika signs, and only Ka3-5 is descending:

Ka1-8 Ka1-10 Ka3-1 Ka3-5 Ka3-10 Kb1-7

It is in parallel with Ga2-17 and not difficult to explain, it is included as the last stage in a synopsis preceding the real calendar:

Ga2-13 Ga2-14 Ga2-15 Ga2-16 Ga2-17

The idea has now grown into a hypothesis: Descending fishes do not occur in spring.

Next we will look at the fishes in Q:

Qa2-123 Qa4-117 Qa4-118 Qb7-108 Qb7-136

None of these glyphs are located in line b1 (or the immediately thereafter following lines). But the descending fishes are so few in number that this statement carries little weight. We need to look also at H and P:

We must therefore coordinate line Qb1 with the corresponding lines in H and P:

Qb1-1 Ha10-35 Pa10-6
Qb1-51 Ha11-6* Pa11-11
51 3 + *20 + 18 + *10 = *51 43

* Beyond Ha10-37 the glyphs are obliterated up to Ha10-101, ca 20 glyphs. Then follow 12 glyphs in line a10. Beyond Ha11-6 ca 10 further glyphs are destroyed.

For H and P the hypothesis is that no descending fishes should occur in the intervals Ha10-35 -- Ha11-6 respectively in Pa10-6 -- Pa11-11.

These are the descending fishes in H:

Hb3-43 Hb4-18 Hb4-46 Hb5-55 Hb6-26

They are far away from the important interval.

Descending fishes in P:

Pa10-32 Pb5-45 Pb6-16 Pb6-45 Pb7-38 Pb8-7

Pa10-32 is where it shouldn't be. We must investigate further. First we notice a lot of rising fishes with 'feathers', then we see that Pa10-32 is special in several ways:

Ha10-108 Ha10-109 Ha10-110 Ha10-111 Ha10-112
Pa10-31 Pa10-32 Pa10-33 Pa10-34 Pa10-35
Qb1-29 Qb1-30 Qb1-31 Qb1-32 Qb1-33

The parallel Ha10-109 and Qb1-30 are honu and not ika glyphs, and they have 'feathers'. More subtly, there is a sign in form of the fish leaning, and we should remember Sunday:

Hb9-17 Hb9-18 Hb9-19 Hb9-20 Hb9-21

The equally inexplicable rau hei in Hb9-19 is also leaning. And the following manu rere is not at the end of the day (as manu rere in Thursday and Saturday). The implication may be that sun is like ika (destined to die because another day is being born at midnight) - the Polynesians did not count days but nights, and the hatchmarked henua glyphs at the beginning of each 'night' probably means 'staffs' in the night. Sun cannot be seen during the night, how should sun be described as a planet? Gb4-12 and Gb4-15 may be comparable:

Gb4-6 Gb4-7 Gb4-8 Gb4-9 Gb4-10 Gb4-11
Gb4-12 Gb4-13 Gb4-14 Gb4-15 Gb4-16 Gb4-17

Even if we have to accept the existence of a descending fish, weakening the hypothesis, I think the hypothesis can stand as it is. There is some riddle connected with Pa10-32 and the explanation of its presence where it should not be must await the solution of the riddle.

Basically we are not out looking for the non-existence of descending fishes in spring, we are out hunting for spring - to locate where in H/P/Q spring is described. In the text of Q - I suggested - spring is in line b1 because of 4 supposedly sky-raising 'staffs'. That was the origin of the search for descending fishes.

Important, therefore, are the pare in Ha10-31 and Pa10-1:

Ha10-30 Ha10-31 Ha10-32 Ha10-33 Ha10-34
Ha10-35 Ha10-36 Ha10-37
Pa9-42 Pa10-1 Pa10-2 Pa10-3 Pa10-4
Pa10-5 Pa10-6 Pa10-7
No parallel in Q.
Qb1-1 Qb1-2 Qb1-3

We recognize Pa10-1 from earlier:

... Possibly 10 will be expressed as two closed fists, for instance in the pare glyph Pa3-3:
114 415 493 133
Pa3-3 Pa10-1 Pb9-33
115 531 1025
416 = 16 * 26 494 = 19 * 26 1
910 = 7 * 13 * 10
1024 = 2 * 2 * .... * 2 (10 times)
The number of glyphs in the P text is 599 (side a) + 559 (side b) = 1158, which can be expressed as 1024 + 1 (Pb9-33) + 133 (7 * 19). Another possibility is 1158 = 35 * 26 + 1 + 247 (13 * 19).

Here the two fists presumably refer to the 10 'months' of the sun, otherwise probably also expressed by 1024 (the number of glyphs from the beginning of the text at Pa1-1 to Pb9-33) ...

These 'spooky' pare glyphs are not signs of spring, rather of the 'evening'. Neither should niu in Pa10-7 and Qb1-3 be anywhere else than in the late 'evening'.

We must continue. Qb1-8 is not far away:

Qa5-34 Qa6-4 Qa9-34 Qb1-8 Qb3-29 Qb4-38 Qb8-118

If 'staffs' should raise the sky roof, it possibly begins already at the birth of a new year. We remember from G:

Gb7-5 Gb7-6 Gb7-7 Gb7-8 Gb7-9 Gb7-10
50 51 52 53 54 55

A fish is rising in Gb7-10 as if to confirm that success is on its way. Something similar may occur in Qb1-8--10 (respectively in Pa10-12--14):

Pa10-8 Pa10-9 Pa10-10 Pa10-11 Pa10-12 Pa10-13 Pa10-14 Pa10-15
Qb1-4 Qb1-5 Qb1-6 Qb1-7 Qb1-8 Qb1-9 Qb1-10 Qb1-11

P and Q do not tell the same story, though. Qb1-10 has an en face tagata, and also in Qb1-7 (tagata rere) are both 'wings' visible. Pa10-13 is indented at the top, not so Qb1-8. In Pa10-10 ihe tau is at right of manu rere, in Q it is at left.

Continuing we find niu glyphs in both texts:

Pa10-16 Pa10-17 Pa10-18 Pa10-19 Pa10-20
Pa10-21 Pa10-22 Pa10-23
Qb1-12 Qb1-13 Qb1-14 Qb1-15 Qb1-16 Qb1-17
-
Qb1-18 Qb1-19

Hope of finding 'sky-raising staffs' in line Qb1 is quickly fading away. There is no reason to go further. The mission has failed.
