Ideas:

1. These two figures, with their backs towards each other, might be the old month (left) and the soon to come new month (right). Waning Moon is bent as in a comma-sign and the Waxing Moon is bent as the letter C in come. The old month is represented by the Waning Moon and the new month by the Waxing Moon.

2. They are both sitting down (and perhaps eating). At the end of an old period (e.g. month) the new period is already making its presence known, it is the time of 'seating'.

3. The arrangement with two persons back to back reminds me of the Roman god Janus, who is sitting at the door of the new year and whose name is living in January.
