This first attempt to fit together the facts in Mamari with
the names of the nights fails already at the start. If the first night
is Ohiro, then where is night no. 2?
According to my reading of Mamari there should be two nights in the 1st period. The Hawaiians say that night no. 2 is Hoaka ('clear'), which becomes Hoata with another spelling. Both Englert and Métraux have (O)ata, which probably is the same night. Englert has this night immediately preceding Ohiro, Métraux just after Hiro. Reasonably we should try to place Oata after Ohiro as night no. 2 in the 1st period. After this improvement there is no problem until we reach to the end of the month, where the two nights in the 8th period (in Mamari) have no counterparts according to the names of Englert and Métraux. No moon visible, why have names? I believe that Englert is correct in considering Ohiro the same night as Oari and that solves the question of where to put Oari. In the table on next page I have included the number of the nights in the 8 periods. It looks quite good. But when I tried to also include the Hawaiian nights, there were problems. E.g. I found only 4 'ko-kore'-nights in the 2nd period instead of the 6 in Mamari.
