12. In order to 'prove' how number is essential in the rongorongo texts I will now make an experiment. I have not earlier tried 'to count' the following glyphs (nor any other similar glyphs in the other texts which have this kind of horizontal 'waves'). But I am confident we will get meaningful results, numbers which either immediately will give us help of which later will be useful.

First we must make a table which incorporates the number of glyphs counted from the beginning of the 'front page' (side a) of the tablet:

side a side b
116 209 175 44 81
Ea3-20 (117) Eb5-27 (502) Eb7-1 (547)
326 302

This first table is essential in order to be certain that we will make no initial mistakes as to what numbers to count with.

Next we should count the distances from one of these glyphs to the next:

81 116 209 175 44
Ea3-20 (117) Eb5-27 (502) Eb7-1 (547)
198 385 45

Not much of interest seems to emerge. But we must not forget to also use the number in the glyph labels. And imediately we can see that 52 * 7 (in Eb5-27) = 364 (equal to 52 weeks).

As I have hinted earlier the best way to count is not the expected 5 * 27, but to combine the number of the line with the first of the following digits before we multiply. I don't know why, but it works.

From this point (i.e. presumably day number 364 in the year) we will find Rogo in Eb7-1 to be placed exactly in his right position, viz. half a quarter later:

44
Eb5-27 Eb7-1 (547)
364 409

Without my experience from the G text I would not have discovered this relationshíp, which probably has been 'embedded' in the text of E in order to make us understand where in time Rogo in Eb7-1 is standing:

44
Gb5-10 Gb6-26
364 409

This game can then be played on by trying to involve also Ea3-20, but we should avoid going further in this labyrinth. Just one step more to satisfy my curiosity - Rogo in Eb7-1 is not (like Rogo in Gb6-26) number 409 from the first glyph on side a, but which glyph should we count from in order to find number 409 at Eb7-1?

It is Ea5-2, and I find it quite satisfactory, but I cannot explain why for the moment, it would take too much time:

Ea4-35 Ea4-36 Ea5-1 Ea5-2 (138)
Ea5-3 Ea5-4 Ea5-5 Ea5-6
Ea5-7 Ea5-8 Ea5-9 Ea5-10
Ea5-11 Ea5-12 Ea5-13 Ea5-14
Ea5-15 Ea5-16 Ea5-17 Ea5-18

The relationship found between Eb5-27 and Rogo in Eb7-1 will support the relationship between the 'ear' in Gb5-10 and Rogo in Gb6-26. We are slowly tightening the bolts of this complicated 'building in time'.
