According
to
Wilkinson
there
was
a
peculiar
custom
in
ancient
Egypt,
where
pregnant
women
would
step
up
onto
a
brick
when
birth
was
due:
He
mentions
this
when
relating
how
in
pictures
a
head
often
was used
pars
pro
toto
as
representing
the
whole
person.
The
female
head
at
right
represented
Menschenet,
the
goddess
of
child
birth.
The
brick
has
here
been
black-painted,
which
I
interpret
as
alluding
to
the
black
night
of
the
Moon
(●)
when
a
new
month
was
born.
However,
Wilkinson
does
not
reflect
on
why
there
was
a
Brick
at
Birth.
I
believe
we
should
also
here
use
the
principle
of
pars
pro
toto
and
then the
single
Brick
ought
to represent
a
Building,
a
house.
Egyptian house |
|
Phoenician beth |
|
Greek beta |
Β (β) |
... Like the names of most other Greek letters, the name of beta was adopted from the acrophonic name of the corresponding letter in Phoenician, which was the common Semitic word *bayt ('house').
In the system of Greek numerals beta had a value of 2. |
The
custom
to
build
a
new
house
at
the
birth
of a
royal baby
boy
was
remembered
on
Easter
Island:
...
'The
traditions
show
that
the
residences
of
the
king
were
fairly
flexible.
The
building
of
new
houses
was
obviously
the
result
of
(male)
births
in
the
royal
family.
In
each
case,
the
house
that
was
built
last
is
left
to
the
newborn
son
and
his
mother,
together
with
a
specific
servant,
while
the
king
has
a
new
and
separate
residence
constructed
for
himself
...
The
'houses
of
the
Moon'
(lunar
stations)
-
such
as
the
Hindu
2nd
nakshatra
station
Bharani
-
were
coordinated
with
where
the
Full
Moon
was
among
the
stars.
At
my
reconstructed
star
positions
for
the
time
of
Bharani
the
nakshatra
date
"March
21
was
at
Ga6-19.
But
Ga5-8
(41
glyphs
earlier)
was
number
472
/ 4
=
118
= 4
*
29½
and
nakshatra
Sirrah
at
March
21
could
here
refer
to
the
Sun 'birth'
south
of
the
equator
at ο Virginis
and
at 12h
close
to
the
southern
spring
equinox.
The
male
head
in
the
Egyptian picture
above is
not
attached
to a
brick
but
to a
piece
of
land
- a
sign
which,
says
Wilkinson,
was
used
when
representing
people
in
Lower
Egypt.
There
is
an
obvious
contrast
between the
black
inside
of a
house,
with
a
female
giving
birth
and
nourishing
children,
on
one
hand and
on
the
other
hand the
alfa
male
outside
in
the
Sun light
making
war
and
conquering
new
lands.

Α (α) |
In Gardiner's sign list this is E2, aggressive bull. |
Wilkinson
had
copied
this
part
of
his
illustration
from
an
object
designed
at the
time
of
the
Narmer
palette,
where
the
military
victories
of
king
Narmer
(1st
dynasty)
was
described,
when
he
was
said
to
have
united
Upper
and
Lower
Egypt
into
a
single
great
land.
...
The
king,
wearing
now
a
short,
stiff
archaic
mantle,
walks
in a
grave
and
stately
manner
to
the
sanctuary
of
the
wolf-god
Upwaut,
the
'Opener
of
the
Way',
where
he
anoints
the
sacred
standard
and,
preceded
by
this,
marches
to
the
palace
chapel,
into
which
he
disappears.
A
period
of
time
elapses
during
which
the
pharaoh
is
no
longer
manifest.
When
he
reappears
he
is
clothed
as
in
the
Narmer
palette,
wearing
the
kilt
with
Hathor
belt
and
bull's
tail
attatched.
In
his
right
hand
he
holds
the
flail
scepter
and
in
his
left,
instead
of
the
usual
crook
of
the
Good
Shepherd,
an
object
resembling
a
small
scroll,
called
the
Will,
the
House
Document,
or
Secret
of
the
Two
Partners,
which
he
exhibits
in
triumph,
proclaiming
to
all
in
attendance
that
it
was
given
him
by
his
dead
father
Osiris,
in
the
presence
of
the
earth-god
Geb.
'I
have
run',
he
cries,
'holding
the
Secret
of
the

Partners,
the

that
my
father
has
given
me
before

I
have
passed
