It is necessary to keep in mind that down on
Easter Island the stars in
the night were the same as those north of the
equator (although the stars located high up in the north were hard to see
because they never went high above the horizon). Therefore, to use the
Julian calendar in order to correlate dates with stars
was in principle no problem. But they had to adapt to such facts
as that Christmas was not in winter but in summer - like those of us who
nowadays are living in Australia. The seasons were upside
down, which could be seen from the orientations of the
constellations and from the face of the Moon - where her C form
did not indicate the waning phase as in the north but her
growing phase.
... One detail which is
iconographically of interest is whether the god responsible for
separating Earth and Sky did so by raising the Sky with his
upraised arms and hands, as in Tahiti and elsewhere, or with his
feet as in New Zealand ...
By counting a month backwards from
the Star-striking Falcon,
Shahin tara zed
(*272) at 'December 18, we will come to 'November 18 (*242) - and
242 (= 2 * 121) seems to have been a Significant number because this
had been chosen as the number of
glyphs on side b of the tablet.
Counted from heliacal
Aldebaran in 'May 1 (121 = 242 / 2) to 'November 18 at Ga8-2 the distance was
*242 - *41 = 201 (= 11 * 11 + 80) days:

I have here above assumed the date given for
Hua tapu in the 12th month Welehu - and indirectly
also for the date at the beginning of the
circuit of Lono - was not according to the
Gregorian calendar but according to the Julian calendar as
applied to the stars in Roman times.
... The
correspondence between the winter solstice and the kali'i
rite of the Makahiki is arrived at as follows: ideally,
the second ceremony of 'breaking the coconut', when the priests
assemble at the temple to spot the rising of the Pleiades,
coincides with the full moon (Hua tapu) of the twelfth
lunar month (Welehu). In the latter eighteenth century,
the Pleiades appear at sunset on 18 November. Ten days later (28
November), the Lono effigy sets off on its circuit, which
lasts twenty-three days, thus bringing the god back for the
climactic battle with the king on 21 December, the solstice (=
Hawaiian 16 Makali'i). The correspondence is 'ideal' and
only rarely achieved, since it depends on the coincidence of the
full moon and the crepuscular rising of the Pleiades
...
In order to find the corresponding Gregorian
dates we first have to add 1 day due to the precession from late
in AD 1778 (when Captain Cook was playing Lono) to
the time of rongorongo (fixed by me as AD 1842 in order to be in
harmony with the relevant Arab star stations).
Then we possibly should adjust the date for the return
of the Pleiades to visibility with 16 days in the other
direction in order to find the corresponding true heliacal day. 18
November + 1 - 16 = November 3 (a π
day). On Easter Island they did not look for the Pleiades in the
evenings but in the mornings.
