Like so many other of the ancient signs its basic meaning has been lost. Nowadays it is simply interpreted as a sign of life. But the horizontal beam of the cross could represent the horizontal frame of reference for observations of the lights (lives) in the sky. The oval 'head' and the straight outstretched 'arms' easily can be imagined as those of a baby, with its body swaddled, and a baby represents life. And life, again, is equal to light:
