It is now possible to arrange our four rau hei glyphs into a meaningful whole:
The fat ones (Ga6-22 and Gb1-22) probably refer to the moon and the lean ones (Gb6-25 and Gb1-25) to the sun. In Gb6-23 there is a 'moon creature' (presumably a fortnight) and its position in the quartet of such glyphs (together with the position of its 'eye hole') is sufficient evidence to suggest that it represents the 'rebirth' connected with rau hei in Ga6-22. Likewise, honu in Gb6-26 - the first day of the new year at winter solstice - is evidently connected with rau hei in Ga6-25. The type of 'reborn person' (sun in this example) surely must reflect the type which is 'sacrificed'. Rau hei in Ga6-25 must incarnate the sun. The moon type of rau hei comes 3 days earlier than the following sun type. Moon is 'reborn' earlier than sun. The tao 'rebirths' (Ga1-22 and Ga1-25) probably illustrate the return of spring light, because they occur a quarter later (472 + 26 - 408 = 90). |
