the meaning is not 'night' but the appearance of 'moon' itself. Confirmation is found in two glyphs containing small moon signs:
Their shapes are not exactly alike - the one used for waxing moon is somewhat thicker than the one for waning moon. This is clearly demonstrated by the first glyphs in the 4 periods for waxing respectively for waning moon, e.g.:
We can therefore be fairly certain that 'oriented the other way' means the appearance of the moon as such. |
