The pu glyphs exhibit two holes, one at the bottom representing the origin (or past) and the other at the top representing the destiny (or future). Through the bottom hole (in the east) celestial bodies enter into our world. Through the top hole (in the west) they later on leave again for 'Hiva'. The model is similar to the ancient Egyptian view of how sun enters in the morning and leaves in the evening:
The top hole may, however, alternatively be used to illustrate 'birth', in which case the top hole may have lent its shape from the open triumphant beak of moa, e.g.:
The bottom hole here has the form of an egg. Inversely, of course, the beak in moa glyphs sometimes exhibit a form alluding to pu. |
