OTHER SIGNS
previous page dictionary home

The rongorongo glyphs normally only delineate the contour of the figure depicted. Sometimes, though, there are signs inside the contour. There is a variant of GD11 which includes an eye.

The eye is a sign which probably carries meaning. Though in P the GD11 birds normally carry such an eye and then the absence of eye in P is a sign which ought to tell us something:

Pa4-26 Pa4-27 Pa4-28 Pa4-29 Pa4-30 Pa4-31

By reason of the 'unfinished twin staff' at right in Pa4-31 (and also by how the moai statues where considered alive only when their eyes were inserted) it can be concluded that in Pa4-30 the 'bird' is not 'alive'.

The variant with eye does not appear in all the texts, for example not in A and not in E. A list of GD11 birds with eye in B is seen here.
